Location: Sunniside, Sunderland
Status: Completed 2006
The former Post Office Building is a Grade II listed building situated at the centre of the Sunniside area of Sunderland. Sunniside was identified as an appropriate area of the old City Centre for regeneration in the Area Regeneration Strategy prepared for City of Sunderland in June 2001. The objective was for Sunniside to become a dynamic and distinctive mixed use quarter within the City Centre. Conservation of the historic environment was key to this, and buildings such as the Post Office were to form a ‘string of pearls’ linking the area with the City Centre, encouraging re-investment of this central area.
The old Post Office comprises two buildings; the main Post Office and the adjoining Sorting Office. The project involved the careful refurbishment and renovation of the main Post Office Building to provide eight apartments.
