St Jude’s Church

Location: Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne
Client: Ian Darby Partnership
Status: Completed 1989

In 1989, Ian Darby Partnership purchased the redundant St Jude’s Church, Newcastle and converted it into new offices for the company, from which we still operate to this day.

After close consultation with the Planning Department and Joint Consultation Working Group, a design philosophy was developed for the Grade II listed former church building. We designed the new mezzanine floor and ancillary accommodation for the offices to be new but reversible. If subsequent owners of the building ever wish to return the church to its original state, the new interventions can be removed without compromising the historical integrity of the building. The completed scheme received a commendation in the Lord Mayors Design Awards of 1994.
