IDPartnership have been asked to prepare a design rationale which builds the ‘exceptional case’ for re-development within the green belt. There was proven to be a local need for executive housing in the Sunderland area, and redevelopment of the former Fulwell Abattoir in the form of a new housing development, was seen to meet the criteria of the ‘exceptional case’.
IDPartnership prepared a design which retained the scale and massing of the existing building, whilst providing high quality executive housing based around the principle of a private shared courtyard area, which controlled all the paraphernalia of every day family life, thus preserving and reducing the amount of visual clutter of the development, when viewed from the open countryside.
