IDPartnership were commissioned in November 2007 to prepare four Supplementary Planning Guidance documents for Blyth. These included the preparation of Urban Design Guide and Public Realm Strategy (including shop front guidance) for Blyth Town Centre. Extensive community consultation was carried out throughout the process and the four documents were adopted by the local authority as Supplementary Planning Guidance in July 2008.
The response created a sequence of spaces in order to link the harbour to the Town Centre and focused on pedestrian permeability and enhancement of desire lines. Gateways, feature buildings and public art were strategically positioned in order to create visual intrigue and legibility. Five character areas were included within the study area – Cultural Quarter, Civic Boulevard, Civic Heart, Market Place, Northern Quay. A shop frontage design code was also included in work prepared.
