Byker Regeneration Strategy

Location: Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne
Client: Your Homes Newcastle
Status: Strategy prepared 2010

Project Description:
The Byker housing estate, designed by Ralph Erskine and constructed during the 1970s, is Grade II* listed, and comprises approximately 1800 homes over 200 acres.

In June 2010, IDPartnership were approached by Your Homes Newcastle to set out a strategy for a new approach to regeneration for the Byker estate, to facilitate working with the Byker Community Trust’s Regeneration Panel.

This regeneration strategy quickly developed into a Visioning Document, that would incorporate indicative regeneration proposals for Byker that would involve and inspire local people. The Byker Communty Trust were committed to improving and safeguarding this historic world heritage site in perpetuity, whilst attracting inward investment. The document and accompanying consultation material, considered a range of environmental improvements, linked to landscape, thermal efficiency, refuse collection, play spaces, and sustainability; all of which needed to be delivered without adversely affecting the integrity of this listed development.

IDP carried out various estate-wide consultation workshops with local residents and stakeholders to gauge opinion on these issues and facilitate forward thinking on the Byker Community Trust’s key decisions within its emerging delivery plan.
